Our Story

Tempura Japanese Cafe first opened in 2007, having been named after the popular Japanese dish, ‘Tempura’– A delicate and crispy batter coating vegetables and seafood.

The cafe fuses traditional Japanese cuisine, including their popular Tempura Chips and Vegetables, and classic Bento Boxes with modern trends to offer a special menu.

Brown rice options are available upon request too for customers preferring or valuing a healthier alternative to white rice.

Whilst the cafe is small, it is rather cozy, with staff continuously working hard to ensure the dining and food is a pleasant experience. Tempura’s Head Chef prides himself on delivering the finest quality food daily, having been led by a strong passion for handcrafting sushi and cooking hot dishes.

With a plethora of authentic Japanese food on offer, and at an affordable price, Tempura Japanese Cafe is the place to be for a quick on-the-go meal.

Good, simple Japanese. Menu is a good size. They have Bento boxes, tempura, Udon soups, really anything you would want for lunch.

This place has excellent chicken katsu, great bento boxes, and delicious appetizers. They also have great vegan options for many dishes. Highly recommend both the chicken katsu and the vegan ‘chicken’ katsu. Quality is consistently good. They are very efficient.

Also their eggplant dishes are delicious!

Small simple cafe with really enjoyable flavourful foods. Really awesome and well prepared. The place is run by a family and they take good care of the food and their customers. We sat in. There are three tables and bar eating by the window with some more tables outside. I had a Katsu Bento Box which was delicious. The place isn’t accessible. It does have a restroom.

Ordered pickup via uber eats. Missing one item, rang the store, got thru after 10 mins (very busy) but fixed the problem luckily very quickly and delivered the missing item. Great food and service.

Best Japanese in Elsternwick and potentially Melbourne. A lot of Vegan and mock meat options! Owners are very nice, they got my order wrong once but gave me a refund immediately without hesitation – always smiling. If you dine in, sit near the fridge, as a lot of Uber eats, etc drivers come in and out, you’ll be away from the action near the fridge.
